Curriculum Intent

Harbour Primary & Nursery School is a big school with big ambitions and high expectations. We are an outward looking school, with a strong sense of community and a commitment to inclusivity. Our children’s voices help us to shape, drive and refine our curriculum, which is constantly evolving.

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, and offers a rich, exciting, and balanced range of activities and learning.   It meets the needs of our children, with a well thought out variety of academic challenges, designed to give all pupils the knowledge and cultural capital they need to be successful learners. We balance the requirement for pupils to reach national expectations in core subjects with our wider curriculum aims of providing a full spectrum of thoughtful and enriching experiences, which reflect the school community and local diversity.

Spiritual, moral, social and cultural learning, along with a planned and structured programme of personal and health development underpins all our work. The curriculum is infused with opportunities to promote mindfulness, and the emotional and mental health and well-being of our children has a high focus.

Our curriculum enables the children to share ideas, express their opinions, and apply knowledge and skills learned in a wide range of meaningful contexts. It offers children opportunities to investigate, question, debate and challenge. It enables children to be curious, to be keen and eager to learn, be inquisitive, be enquiring and to appreciate the wonder of discovering something new and different. 

Our focus on curriculum development at Harbour has always been carefully designed to ensure coverage and progression. It provides pupils with memorable experiences, in addition to diverse and rich opportunities from which children can learn and develop a range of transferable skills. A primary focus of our curriculum is to raise aspirations, know the importance of, and be proud of their locality, engender a sense of personal pride in achievement, provide a purpose and relevance for learning and ultimately to help every child to find strengths and interests.

Our EYFS curriculum has been planned carefully to provide opportunities that are relevant to our children and their interests, that are exciting, flexible, enable risk taking, are outdoors as much as possible and that simply engage the children so much that they don’t want to go home.

Flexibility is important to us since we need to respond to the differences we have in our cohort intakes. We plan and establish an environment that is stimulating and organised to enable all children to engage in a wide variety of activities using their imagination and creativity across the curriculum
